2 CHRONICLES 35

The Passover Observed Again

1 Josiah celebrated the Passover to the Lordin Jerusalem; they slaughtered the Passoverlambson the fourteenthdayof the first month.

2 He appointed the priests to their positions and encouraged them in the service of the house of the Lord.

3 To the Levites who taught all Israel and were holy to the Lordhe said, “Put the holy ark in the house (temple) which Solomon the son of David king of Israel built; it shall not be a burden [carried] on your shoulders any longer. Now serve the Lordyour God and His people Israel.

4 Prepareyourselvesaccording to your fathers’ (ancestors’) households by your divisions, in accordance with the instructions of David king of Israel, and the instructions of his son Solomon.

5 And stand in the holy place [of the priests] according to the sections of the fathers’ households of your fellow kinsmen the lay people, and according to the Levites, by division of [the families of] a father’s household.

6 Slaughter the Passoverlambsand consecrate yourselves, and prepare for your fellow countrymen to carry out (obey) the word of the Lordgivenby Moses.”

7 Then Josiah contributed to the lay people, to all who were present, flocks of lambs and young goats numbering 30,000, all as Passover offerings, and 3,000 bulls–these were from the king’s property.

8 His officers also contributed a voluntary offering to the people, the priests and the Levites. Hilkiah, Zechariah, and Jehiel, the officials of the house of God, gave to the priests for the Passover offerings 2,600from the flocks[of lambs and young goats], and 300 bulls.

9 Conaniah also, and Shemaiah and Nethanel, his brothers, and Hashabiah and Jeiel and Jozabad, officers of the Levites, contributed to the Levites for the Passover offerings 5,000from the flocks[of lambs and young goats], and 500 bulls.

10 When the service was ready, the priests stood in their [assigned] places and the Levites by their divisions, in accordance with the king’s command.

11 They slaughtered the Passoverlambs, and while the priests sprinkled the bloodreceivedfrom their hand, the Levites skinnedthe animals.

12 Then they removed the burnt offerings, to distribute them to the sections of the fathers’ households of the lay people to offer to the Lord, as it is written in the Book of Moses. They didthe same with the bulls.

13 So they roasted the Passoverlambson the fire according to the ordinance; and they cooked the holy offerings in pots, in kettles, and in pans, and quickly brought them to all the lay people.

14 Afterward the Levites prepared for themselves and for the priests, because the priests, the sons of Aaron, were busyoffering the burnt offerings and the fat until night; so the Levites prepared for themselves and for the priests, the sons of Aaron.

15 The singers, the sons of Asaph, were also in their places in accordance with the command of David, Asaph, Heman, and Jeduthun the king’s seer; and the gatekeepers at each gate did not need to leave their service, because their kinsmen the Levites prepared for them.

16 So all the service of the Lordwas prepared on that day to celebrate the Passover, and to offer burnt offerings on the altar of the Lord, in accordance with the command of King Josiah.

17 Thus the sons of Israel who were present celebrated the Passover at that time, and the Feast of Unleavened Bread for seven days.

18 No Passover like it had been celebrated in Israel since the days of Samuel the prophet; nor had any of the kings of Israel celebrated such a Passover as Josiah did with the priests, the Levites, all Judah and Israel who were present, and the inhabitants of Jerusalem.

19 In the eighteenth year of Josiah’s reign this Passover was celebrated.

Josiah Dies in Battle

20 After all this, when Josiah had prepared the temple, Neco king of Egypt came up to make war at Carchemish on the Euphrates, and Josiah went out to meet him.

21 But Neco sent messengers to Josiah, saying, “What business do we have with each other, O King of Judah?I amnotcomingagainst you today, but against the house with which I am at war, and God has ordered me to hurry. Stop for your own sake frominterfering withGod who is with me, so that He will not destroy you.”

22 Yet Josiah would not turn away from him, but disguised himself in order to fight against him. He did not listen to the words of Neco from the mouth of God, but came to fight against him on the plain of Megiddo.

23 The archers shot King Josiah, and the king said to his servants, “Take me away, for I am badly wounded.”

24 So his servants took him out of the chariot and carried him in the second chariot which he had, and brought him to Jerusalem where he died and was buried in the tombs of his fathers. All Judah and Jerusalem mourned for Josiah.

25 Then Jeremiah sung a lament (funeral song) for Josiah, and all the male and female singers have spoken about Josiah in their laments to this day. They made the songs an ordinance in Israel; behold, they are written in the Lamentations.

26 Now the rest of the acts of Josiah and his deeds of devotionandgodly achievements as written in the Law of the Lord,

27 and his acts, from the first to the last, behold, they are written in the Book of the Kings of Israel and Judah.

2 CHRONICLES 36

Jehoahaz, Jehoiakim, then Jehoiachin Rule

1 Then the people of the land took Joahaz the son of Josiah, and made him king in Jerusalem in place of his father.

2 Joahaz was twenty-three years old when he became king, and he reigned [only] three months in Jerusalem.

3 Then the king of Egypt deposed him at Jerusalem, and imposed a fine on the land of a hundred talents of silver and one talent of gold.

4 The king of Egypt made Eliakim, the brotherof Joahaz, king over Judah and Jerusalem, and changed his name to Jehoiakim. But Neco took Joahaz his brother, and brought him to Egypt.

5 Jehoiakim was twenty-five years old when he became king, and he reigned for eleven years in Jerusalem; and he did evil in the sight of the Lordhis God.

6 Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon came up against him and bound him with bronze [chains] to take him to Babylon.

7 Nebuchadnezzar also brought some of the articles of the house (temple) of the Lordto Babylon and put them in his temple there.

8 Now the rest of the acts of Jehoiakim and the repulsive acts which he committed, and what was found against him, behold, they are written in the Book of the Kings of Israel and Judah. And his son Jehoiachin became king in his place.

9 Jehoiachin was eight[teen] years old when he became king, and he reigned for three months and ten days in Jerusalem, and he did evil in the sight of the Lord.

Captivity in Babylon Begun

10 Now at the turn of the year [in the spring], King Nebuchadnezzar sentwordand had him brought to Babylon with the valuable articles of the house of the Lord, and made his brother Zedekiah king over Judah and Jerusalem.

Zedekiah Rules in Judah

11 Zedekiah was twenty-one years old when he became king, and he reigned for eleven years in Jerusalem.

12 He did evil in the sight of the Lordhis God; he did not humble himself before Jeremiah the prophet, who spokefor the Lord.

13 He also rebelled against King Nebuchadnezzar who had made him swearallegianceby God. He stiffened his neck and hardened his heart against turning to the LordGod of Israel.

14 Also, all the officials of the priests and the people were very unfaithful, followingall the repulsive acts of the [pagan] nations; and they defiled the house of the Lordwhich He had sanctified in Jerusalem.

15 The Lord, the God of their fathers, sentwordto them again and again by His messengers, because He had compassion on His people and on His dwelling place.

16 But they kept mocking the messengers of God and despising His words and scoffing at His prophets until the wrath of the Lordarose against His people, until there was no remedyorhealing.

17 Therefore He brought the king of the Chaldeans against them, who killed their young men with the sword in the house of their sanctuary, and had no compassion on young man or virgin, old man or infirm; He gave them all into his hand.

18 And as for all the articles of the house of God, great and small, and the treasures of the house of the Lord, and the treasures of the king and of his officials, he brought them all to Babylon.

19 Then they burned the house of God and tore down the wall of Jerusalem, and burned all its fortified buildings with fire, and destroyed all its valuable articles.

20 He deported to Babylon those who had escaped from the sword; and they were servants to him and to his sons until the kingdom of Persia was established there,

21 to fulfill the word of the Lordby the mouth of Jeremiah, until the land had restored its Sabbaths; for as long as the land lay desolate it kept Sabbath until seventy years were complete.

Cyrus Permits Return

22 Now in the first year of Cyrus king of Persia–in order to fulfill the word of the Lordby the mouth of Jeremiah–the Lordstirred up the spirit of Cyrus king of Persia, so that he sent a proclamation throughout his kingdom, and alsoput itin writing, saying,

23 “Thus says Cyrus king of Persia: ‘The Lord, the God of heaven, has given me all the kingdoms of the earth, and He has appointed me to build Him a house in Jerusalem, which is in Judah. Whoever there is among you of all His people, may the Lordhis God be with him, and let him go up [to Jerusalem]!’”

11 The sons of Gad lived opposite them in the land of Bashan, as far as Salecah:

12 Joel was the chief, Shapham the second, then Janai and Shaphat in Bashan.

13 Their relatives from the households of their fathers: Michael, Meshullam, Sheba, Jorai, Jacan, Zia, and Eber–sevenin all.

14 These were the sons of Abihail the son of Huri, the son of Jaroah, the son of Gilead, the son of Michael, the son of Jeshishai, the son of Jahdo, the son of Buz;

15 Ahi the son of Abdiel, the son of Guni, was chief in their fathers’ households.

16 They lived in Gilead, in Bashan and in its towns, and in all the [surrounding] pasture lands of Sharon, as far as their borders.

17 All these were enrolled in the genealogies in the days of Jotham king of Judah and in the days of Jeroboam [II] king of Israel.

18 The sons of Reuben, the Gadites, and the half-tribe of Manasseh–valiant men able to bear shield and sword, and to shoot with the bow, and skillful in war–were 44,760 who went to war.

19 And these Israelites, [on the east side of the Jordan River] made war with the Hagrites [a tribe of northern Arabia], Jetur, Naphish, and Nodab.

20 They were given help against them, and the Hagrites were handed over to them, and all who werealliedwith them; for they cried out to God [for help] in the battle; and He granted their entreaty because they relied onandtrusted in Him.

21 These Israelites took away their livestock: their 50,000 camels, and 250,000 sheep, and 2,000 donkeys; and 100,000people.

22 For a great number fell mortally wounded, because the battle was of God. And these Israelites settled in their territory until the exile [by Assyria more than five centuries later].

Descendants of Manasseh

23 Now the sons (people) of the half-tribe of Manasseh lived in the land; their settlements spread from Bashan to Baal-hermon and Senir and Mount Hermon.

24 These were the heads of their fathers’ households: Epher, Ishi, Eliel, Azriel, Jeremiah, Hodaviah, and Jahdiel, warriors of valor [willing and able to encounter danger], famous men, and heads of the households of their fathers.

25 But they acted treacherously against the God of their fathers and played the prostitute with the gods of the peoples of the land, whom God had destroyed before them.

26 So the God of Israel stirred up the spirit of Pul, king of Assyria, [that is,] the spirit of Tilgath-pilneser king of Assyria, and he carried them away into exile–the Reubenites, the Gadites, and the half-tribe of Manasseh–and brought them to Halah, Habor, Hara, and the river Gozan, [where they remain] to this day.
