EPHESIANS 5

Be Imitators of God

1 Therefore become imitators of God [copy Him and follow His example], as well-beloved children [imitate their father];

2 and walkcontinuallyin love [that is, value one another–practice empathy and compassion, unselfishly seeking the best for others], just as Christ also loved you and gave Himself up for us, an offering and sacrifice to God [slain for you, so that it became] a sweet fragrance.

3 But sexual immorality and all [moral] impurity [indecent, offensive behavior] or greed must not even be hinted at among you, as is proper among saints [for as believers our way of life, whether in public or in private, reflects the validity of our faith].

4 Let there be no filthiness and silly talk, or coarse [obscene or vulgar] joking,becausesuch things are not appropriate [for believers]; but instead speak of your thankfulness [to God].

5 For be sure of this: no immoral, impure, or greedy person–for that one is [in effect] an idolater–has any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and God [for such a person places a higher value on something other than God].

6 Let no one deceive you with empty arguments [that encourage you to sin], for because of these things the wrath of God comes upon the sons of disobedience [those who habitually sin].

7 So do not participateoreven associate with them [in the rebelliousness of sin].

8 For once you were darkness, but now you are Light in the Lord; walk as children of Light [live as those who are native-born to the Light]

9 (for the fruit [the effect, the result] of the Light consists in all goodness and righteousness and truth),

10 trying to learn [by experience] what is pleasing to the Lord [and letting your lifestyles be examples of what is most acceptable to Him–your behavior expressing gratitude to God for your salvation].

11 Do not participate in the worthlessandunproductive deeds of darkness, but instead expose them [by exemplifying personal integrity, moral courage, and godly character];

12 for it is disgraceful even to mention the things that such people practice in secret.

13 But all things become visible when they are exposed by the light [of God’s precepts], forit is light that makes everything visible.

14 For this reason He says,

“Awake, sleeper,

And arise from the dead,

And Christ will shine [as dawn] upon youandgive you light.”

15 Therefore see that you walk carefully [living life with honor, purpose, and courage; shunning those who tolerate and enable evil], not as the unwise, but as wise [sensible, intelligent, discerning people],

16 making the very most of your time [on earth, recognizing and taking advantage of each opportunity and using it with wisdom and diligence], because the days are [filled with] evil.

17 Therefore do not be foolishandthoughtless, but understandandfirmly grasp what the will of the Lord is.

18 Do not get drunk with wine, for that is wickedness (corruption, stupidity), but be filled with the [Holy] Spiritandconstantly guided by Him.

19 Speak to one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, [offering praise by] singing and making melody with your heart to the Lord;

20 always giving thanks to God the Father for all things, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ;

21 being subject to one another out of reverence for Christ.

Marriage Like Christ and the Church

22 Wives, besubjectto your own husbands, as [a service] to the Lord.

23 For the husband is head of the wife, as Christ is head of the church, Himselfbeingthe Savior of the body.

24 But as the church is subject to Christ, so also wives should be subject to their husbands in everything [respecting both their position as protector and their responsibility to God as head of the house].

25 Husbands, love your wives [seek the highest good for her and surround her with a caring, unselfish love], just as Christ also loved the church and gave Himself up for her,

26 so that He might sanctify the church, having cleansed her by the washing of water with the word [of God],

27 so that [in turn] He might present the church to Himself in glorious splendor, without spot or wrinkle or any such thing; but that she would be holy [set apart for God] and blameless.

28 Even so husbands shouldandare morally obligated to love their own wives as [being in a sense] their own bodies. He who loves his own wife loves himself.

29 For no one ever hated his own body, but [instead] he nourishesandprotects and cherishes it, just as Christ does the church,

30 because we are members (parts) of His body.

31 For this reason a man shall leave his father and his mother and shall be joined[and be faithfully devoted]to his wife,and the two shall becomeone flesh.

32 This mystery [of two becoming one] is great; but I am speaking with reference to [the relationship of] Christ and the church.

33 However, each man among you [without exception] is to love his wife as his very own self [with behavior worthy of respect and esteem, always seeking the best for her with an attitude of lovingkindness], and the wife [must see to it] that she respectsanddelights in her husband [that she notices him and prefers him and treats him with loving concern, treasuring him, honoring him, and holding him dear].

EPHESIANS 6

Family Relationships

1 Children, obey your parents in the Lord [that is, accept their guidance and discipline as His representatives], for this is right [for obedience teaches wisdom and self-discipline].

2 Honor[esteem, value as precious]your father and your mother[and be respectful to them]–this is the first commandment with a promise–

3 so that it may be well with you,and that you may have a long life on the earth.

4 Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger [do not exasperate them to the point of resentment with demands that are trivial or unreasonable or humiliating or abusive; nor by showing favoritism or indifference to any of them], but bring them up [tenderly, with lovingkindness] in the discipline and instruction of the Lord.

5 Slaves, be obedient to those who are your earthly masters, with respect for authority, and with a sincere heart [seeking to please them], as [service] to Christ–

6 not in the way of eye-service [working only when someone is watching you and only] to please men, but as slaves of Christ, doing the will of God from your heart;

7 rendering service with goodwill, as to the Lord, and not [only] to men,

8 knowing that whatever good thing each one does, he will receive this back from the Lord, whether [he is] slave or free.

9 You masters, do the same [showing goodwill] toward them, and give up threateningandabusive words, knowing that [He who is] both their true Master and yours is in heaven, and that there is no partiality with Him [regardless of one’s earthly status].

The Armor of God

10 In conclusion, be strong in the Lord [draw your strength from Him and be empowered through your union with Him] and in the power of His [boundless] might.

11 Put on the full armor of God [for His precepts are like the splendid armor of a heavily-armed soldier], so that you may be able to [successfully] stand up against all the schemesandthe strategiesandthe deceits of the devil.

12 For our struggle is not against flesh and blood [contending only with physical opponents], but against the rulers, against the powers, against the world forces of this [present] darkness, against the spiritualforcesof wickedness in the heavenly (supernatural)places.

13 Therefore, put on the complete armor of God, so that you will be able to [successfully] resistandstand your ground in the evil day [of danger], and having done everything [that the crisis demands], to stand firm [in your place, fully prepared, immovable, victorious].

14 So stand firmandhold your ground,havingtightened the wide band of truth(personal integrity, moral courage)around your waistandhaving put on the breastplate of righteousness(an upright heart),

15 and havingstrapped onyour feet the gospel of peace in preparation[to face the enemy with firm-footed stability and the readiness produced by the good news].

16 Above all, lift up the [protective]shield of faith with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evilone.

17 And takethe helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God.

18 With all prayer and petition pray [with specific requests] at all times [on every occasion and in every season] in the Spirit, and with this in view, stay alert with all perseverance and petition [interceding in prayer] for allGod’s people.

19 Andprayfor me, that words may be given to me when I open my mouth, to proclaim boldly the mystery of the good news [of salvation],

20 for which I am an ambassador in chains. Andpraythat inproclaimingit I may speak boldlyandcourageously, as I should.

21 Now, so that you may know how I am and what I am doing, Tychicus, the beloved brother and faithful minister in the Lord, will tell you everything.

22 I have sent him to you for this very purpose, so that you may know how we are, and that he may comfortandencourageandstrengthen your hearts.

23 Peace be to thebrothers and sisters, and love joined with faith, from God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.

24 Grace be with all who love our Lord Jesus Christ with undyingandincorruptiblelove.

GALATIANS 1

Introduction

1 Paul, an apostle (not commissionedandsent from men nor through the agency of man, but through Jesus Christ–the Messiah–and God the Father, who raised Him from the dead),

2 and all the brothers who are with me,

To the churches of Galatia:

3 Grace to you and peace [inner calm and spiritual well-being] from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ,

4 who gave Himself [as a sacrifice to atone] for our sins [to save and sanctify us] so that He might rescue us from this present evilage, in accordance with the willandpurposeandplan of our God and Father–

5 to Him be [ascribed all] the glory through the ages of the ages. Amen.

Perversion of the Gospel

6 I am astonishedandextremely irritated that you are so quickly shifting your allegianceanddeserting Him who called you by the grace of Christ, for a different [even contrary] gospel;

7 which is really not another [gospel]; but there are [obviously]some [people masquerading as teachers] who are disturbingandconfusing you [with a misleading, counterfeit teaching] and want to distort the gospel of Christ [twisting it into something which it absolutely is not].

8 But even if we, or an angel from heaven, should preach to you a gospel contrary to that which we [originally] preached to you, let him be condemned to destruction!

9 As we have said before, so I now say again, if anyone is preaching to you a gospel different from that which you received [from us], let him be condemned to destruction!

10 Am I nowtrying to win the favorandapproval of men, or of God? Or am I seeking to please someone? If I were still trying to be popular with men, I would not be a bond-servant of Christ.

Paul Defends His Ministry

11 For I want you to know,believers, that the gospel which was preached by me is not man’s gospel [it is not a human invention, patterned after any human concept].

12 For indeed I did not receive it from man, nor was I taught it, butI received itthrough a [direct] revelation of Jesus Christ.

13 You have heard of my careerandformer manner of life in Judaism, how I used to hunt downandpersecute the church of God extensively and [with fanatical zeal] tried [my best] to destroy it.

14 And [you have heard how] I surpassed many of my contemporaries among my countrymen in [my advanced study of the laws of] Judaism, as I was extremely loyal to the traditions of my ancestors.

15 But when God, who had chosen meandset me apart before I was born, and called me through His grace, was pleased

16 to reveal His Son in me so that I might preach Him among the Gentiles [as the good news–the way of salvation], I did not immediately consult withanyone [for guidance regarding God’s call and His revelation to me].

17 Nor did I [even] go up to Jerusalem to those who were apostles before me; but I went to Arabiaandstayed awhile, and afterward returned once more to Damascus.

18 Then three years later I did go up to Jerusalem to get acquainted with Cephas (Peter), and I stayed with him fifteen days.

19 But I did not see any other apostle except James, the [half] brother of the Lord.

20 (Now in what I am writing to you, I assure you as if I were standing before God that I am not lying.)

21 Then I went into the regions of Syria and Cilicia.

22 And I was still unknown by sight to the churches which were in Christ in Judea (Jerusalem and the surrounding region);

23 they only kept hearing, “He who used to persecute us is now preaching the [good news of the] faith which he once was trying to destroy.”

24 And they were glorifying God [as the Author and Source of what had taken place and all that had been accomplished] in me.

GALATIANS 2

The Council at Jerusalem

1 Then after a period of fourteen years I again went up to Jerusalem, [this time] with Barnabas, taking Titus along also.

2 I went up [to Jerusalem] because of a [divine] revelation, and I put before them the gospel which I preach among the Gentiles. ButI did soin private before those ofreputation, for fear that I might be running or had run [the course of my ministry] in vain.

3 But [all went well, for] not even Titus, who was with me, was compelled [as some had anticipated] to be circumcised, despite the fact that he was a Greek.

4 My concern was because of thefalse brothers [those people masquerading as Christians] who had been secretly smuggled in [to the community of believers]. They had slipped in to spy on the freedom which we have in Christ Jesus, in order to bring us back into bondage [under the Law of Moses].

5 But we did not yield to them even for a moment, so that the truth of the gospel would continue to remain with you [in its purity].

6 But from those who were of high reputation (whatever they were–in terms of individual importance–makes no difference to me; God shows no partiality–He is not impressed with the positions that people hold nor does He recognize distinctions such as fame or power)–well, those who were of reputation contributed nothing to me [that is, they had nothing to add to my gospel message nor did they impose any new requirements on me].

7 But on the contrary, they saw that I had been entrusted with the gospel to the uncircumcised (Gentiles), just as Peterhad been[entrusted to proclaim the gospel] to the circumcised (Jews);

8 (for He who worked effectively for Peterandempowered him in his ministry to the Jews also worked effectively for meandempowered me in my ministry to the Gentiles).

9 And recognizing the grace [that God had] bestowed on me, James and Cephas (Peter) and John, who were reputed to be pillars [of the Jerusalem church], gave to me and Barnabas theright hand of fellowship, so that we could go to the Gentiles [with their blessing] and they to the circumcised (Jews).

10 They askedonly [one thing], that we remember the poor, the very thing I was also eager to do.

Peter (Cephas) Opposed by Paul

11 Now when Cephas (Peter) came to Antioch, I opposed him face to face [about his conduct there], because he stood condemned [by his own actions].

12 Before certain men came from James, he used to eat [his meals] with the Gentiles; but when the men [from Jerusalem] arrived, hebeganto withdraw and separate himself [from the Gentile believers], because he was afraid of those from thecircumcision.

13 The rest of the Jews joined him in this hypocrisy [ignoring their knowledge that Jewish and Gentile Christians were united, under the new covenant, into one faith], with the result that even Barnabas was carried away by their hypocrisy.

14 But when I saw that they were not being straightforward about the truth of the gospel, I told Cephas (Peter) in front of everyone, “If you, being a Jew, live [as you have been living] like a Gentile and not like a Jew, how is it that you are [now virtually] forcing the Gentiles to live like Jews [if they want to eat with you]?”

15 [I went on to say] “We are Jews by birth and not sinners from among the Gentiles;

16 yet we know that a man is notjustified [and placed in right standing with God] by works of the Law, but [only] through faith in [God’s beloved Son,] Christ Jesus. And even we [as Jews] have believed in Christ Jesus, so that we may be justified by faith in Christ and not by works of the Law. By observing the Law no one will ever be justified [declared free of the guilt of sin and its penalty].

17 But if, while we seek to be justified in Christ [by faith], we ourselves are found to be sinners, does that make Christ an advocateorpromoter of our sin? Certainly not!

18 For if I [or anyone else should] rebuild [through word or by practice] what I once tore down [the belief that observing the Law is essential for salvation], I prove myself to be a transgressor.

19 For through the Law I died to the Lawandits demands on me [because salvation is provided through the death and resurrection of Christ], so that I might [from now on] live to God.

20 I have been crucified with Christ [that is, in Him I have shared His crucifixion]; it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me. ThelifeI now live in the body I live by faith [by adhering to, relying on, and completely trusting] in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself up for me.

21 I do not ignoreornullify the [gracious gift of the] grace of God [His amazing, unmerited favor], for if righteousnesscomesthrough [observing] the Law, then Christ died needlessly. [His suffering and death would have had no purpose whatsoever.]”

GALATIANS 3

Faith Brings Righteousness

1 O you foolishandthoughtlessandsuperficial Galatians, who has bewitched you [that you would act like this], to whom–right before your very eyes–Jesus Christ was publicly portrayed as crucified [in the gospel message]?

2 This is all I want to ask of you: did you receive the [Holy] Spirit as the result of obeying [the requirements of] the Law, or was it the result of hearing [the message of salvation and] with faith [believing it]?

3 Are you so foolishandsenseless? Having begun [your new life by faith] with the Spirit, are you now being perfectedandreaching spiritual maturity by the flesh [that is, by your own works and efforts to keep the Law]?

4 Have you suffered so many thingsandexperienced so much all for nothing–if indeed it was all for nothing?

5 So then, does He who supplies you with His [marvelous Holy] Spirit and works miracles among you, do it as a result of the works of the Law [which you perform], or because you [believe confidently in the message which you] heard with faith?

6 Just as AbrahambelievedGod,and it was credited to him as righteousness, [as conformity to God’s will and purpose–so it is with you also].

7 So understand that it is the people who live by faith [with confidence in the power and goodness of God] who are [the true] sons ofAbraham.

8 The Scripture, foreseeing that God would justify the Gentiles by faith, proclaimed the good news [of the Savior] to Abraham in advance [with this promise],saying,“In you shall all the nations be blessed.”

9 So then those who are people of faith [whether Jew or Gentile] are blessedandfavored by God [and declared free of the guilt of sin and its penalty, and placed in right standing with Him] along with Abraham, the believer.

10 For all who depend on the Law [seeking justification and salvation by obedience to the Law and the observance of rituals] are under a curse; for it is written, “Cursed(condemned to destruction)is everyone who does not abide by all things written in the book of the law,so as to practice them.”

11 Now it is clear that no one is justified [that is, declared free of the guilt of sin and its penalty, and placed in right standing] before God by the Law, for “The righteous(the just, the upright)shall live by faith.”

12 But the Law does not rest onorrequire faith [it has nothing to do with faith], but [instead, the Law]says,“He who practices them[the things prescribed by the Law]shall live by them[instead of faith].”

13 Christ purchased our freedomandredeemed us from the curse of the Lawandits condemnation by becoming a curse for us–for it is written, “Cursed is everyone who hangs[crucified]on a tree(cross)”–

14 in order that in Christ Jesus the blessing of Abraham might also come to the Gentiles, so that we would all receive [the realization of] the promise of the [Holy] Spirit through faith.

Intent of the Law

15 Brothers and sisters, I speak in terms of human relations: even though a last will and testament is just a human covenant, yet when it has been signedandmade legally binding, no one sets it aside or adds to it [modifying it in some way].

16 Now the promises [in the covenants] were decreed to Abraham and to his seed. God does not say, “And to seeds (descendants, heirs),” as if [referring] to many [persons], but as to one, “And to your Seed,” who is [none other than] Christ.

17 This is what I mean: the Law, which came into existence four hundred and thirty years later [after the covenant concerning the coming Messiah], does notandcannot invalidate the covenant previously established by God, so as to abolish the promise.

18 For if the inheritance [of what was promised] is based on [observing] the Law [as these false teachers claim], it is no longer based on a promise; however, God granted it to Abraham [as a gift] by virtue of His promise.

19 Why, then, the Law [what was its purpose]? It was added [after the promise to Abraham, to reveal to people their guilt] because of transgressions [that is, to make people conscious of the sinfulness of sin], and [the Law] was ordained through angelsanddelivered to Israel by the hand of a mediator [Moses, the mediator between God and Israel, to be in effect] until the Seed would come to whom the promise had been made.

20 Now the mediatororgo-between [in a transaction] is not [needed] for just oneparty;whereas God isonlyone [and was the only One giving the promise to Abraham, but the Law was a contract between two, God and Israel; its validity depended on both].

21 Is the Law then contrary to the promises of God? Certainly not! For if asystem oflaw had been given which could impart life, then righteousness (right standing with God) would actually have been based on law.

22 But the Scripture has imprisonedeveryone [everything–the entire world] under sin, so that [the inheritance, the blessing of salvation] which was promised through faith in Jesus Christ might be given to those who believe [in Him and acknowledge Him as God’s precious Son].

23 Now before faith came, we were kept in custody under the Law, [perpetually] imprisoned [in preparation] for the faith that was destined to be revealed,

24 with the result that the Law has become our tutorandour disciplinarianto guide usto Christ, so that we may bejustified [that is, declared free of the guilt of sin and its penalty, and placed in right standing with God] by faith.

25 But now that faith has come, we are no longer under [the control and authority of] a tutoranddisciplinarian.

26 For you [who are born-again have been reborn from above–spiritually transformed, renewed, sanctified and] are all children of God [set apart for His purpose with full rights and privileges] through faith in Christ Jesus.

27 For all of you who were baptized into Christ [into a spiritual union with the Christ, the Anointed] have clothed yourselves with Christ [that is, you have taken on His characteristics and values].

28 There is [now no distinction in regard to salvation] neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is neither male nor female; for you [who believe] are all one in Christ Jesus [no one can claim a spiritual superiority].

29 And if you belong to Christ [if you are in Him], then you are Abraham’s descendants, and [spiritual] heirs according to [God’s] promise.

GALATIANS 4

Sonship in Christ

1 Now what I mean [when I talk about children and their guardians] is this: as long as the heir is a child, he does not differ at all from a slave even though he is the [future owner and] master of all [the estate];

2 but he is under [the authority of] guardians and household administratorsormanagers until the date set by his father [when he is of legal age].

3 So also we [whether Jews or Gentiles], when we were children (spiritually immature), were kept like slaves under the elementary [man-made religious or philosophical] teachings of the world.

4 But when [in God’s plan] the proper time had fully come, God sent His Son, born of a woman, born under the [regulations of the] Law,

5 so that He might redeemandliberate those who were under the Law, that we [who believe] might be adopted as sons [as God’s children with all rights as fully grown members of a family].

6 And because you [really] are [His] sons, God has sent the Spirit of His Son into our hearts, crying out,“Abba! Father!”

7 Therefore you are no longer a slave (bond-servant), but a son; and if a son, then also an heir through [the gracious act of] God [through Christ].

8 But at that time, when you did not know [the true] Godandwere unacquainted with Him, you [Gentiles] were slaves to those [pagan] things which by [their very] nature were notandcould not be godsat all.

9 Now, however, since you have come to know [the true] God [through personal experience], or rather to be known by God, how is it that you are turning back again to the weak and worthless elemental principles [of religions and philosophies], to which you want to be enslaved all over again?

10 [For example,] you observe [particular] days and months and seasons and years.

11 I fear for you, that perhaps I have labored [to the point of exhaustion] over you in vain.

12 Believers, I beg of you, become as I am [free from the bondage of Jewish ritualism and ordinances], for Ihave becomeas you are [a Gentile]. You did me no wrong [when I first came to you; do not do it now].

13 On the contrary, you know that it was because of a physical illness that I [remained and] preached the gospel to you the first time;

14 and even though my physical condition was a trial to you, you did not regard it with contempt, or scornandreject me; but you received me as an angel of God, even as Christ JesusHimself.

15 What then has become of that sense of blessingandthe joy that you once had [from your salvation and your relationship with Christ]? For I testify of you that, if possible, you would have torn out your own eyes and given them to me [to replace mine].

16 So have I become your enemy by telling you the truth?

17 These men [the Judaizers] eagerly seek you [to entrap you with honeyed words and attention, to win you over to their philosophy], not honorably [for their purpose is not honorable or worthy of consideration]. They want to isolate you [from us who oppose them] so that you will seek them.

18 Now it is always pleasant to be eagerly sought after [provided that it is] for a good purpose, and not just when I am with you [seeking you myself–but beware of the others doing it].

19 My little children, for whom I am again in [the pains of] labor until Christ is [completely and permanently] formed within you–

20 how I wish that I were with you now and could change my tone, because I am perplexed in regard to you.

Bond and Free

21 Tell me, you who are bent on being under the Law, do you not listen to [what] the Law [really says]?

22 For it is written that Abraham had two sons, one by the slave woman [Hagar] and one by the free woman [Sarah].

23 But the child of the slave woman was born according to the fleshandhad an ordinary birth, while the son of the free woman was born in fulfillment of the promise.

24 Now these facts are about to be used [by me] as an allegory [that is, I will illustrate by using them]: for thesewomencan represent two covenants: one [covenant originated] from Mount Sinai [where the Law was given] that bears children [destined] for slavery; she is Hagar.

25 Now Hagar is (represents) Mount Sinai in Arabia and she corresponds to the present Jerusalem, for she is in slavery with her children.

26 But the Jerusalem above [that is, the way of faith, represented by Sarah] is free; she is our mother.

27 For it is written [in the Scriptures],

“Rejoice,o barren woman who has not given birth;

Break forth into a[joyful]shout,you who are not in labor;

For the desolate woman has many more children

Than she who has a husband.”

28 And we, [believing] brothers and sisters, like Isaac, are children [not merely of physical descent, like Ishmael, but are children born] of promise [born miraculously].

29 But as at that time the child [of ordinary birth] born according to the flesh persecuted the sonwho was bornaccording to [the promise and working of] the Spirit, so it is now also.

30 But what does the Scripture say?

“Cast out the bondwoman[Hagar]and her son[Ishmael],

For never shall the son of the bondwoman be heirandshare the inheritance with the son of the free woman.”

31 So then, believers, we [who are born again–reborn from above–spiritually transformed, renewed, and set apart for His purpose] are not children of a slave woman [the natural], but of the free woman [the supernatural].

GALATIANS 5

Walk by the Spirit

1 It was for this freedom that Christ set us free [completely liberating us]; therefore keep standing firm and do not be subject again to a yoke of slavery [which you once removed].

2 Notice, it is I, Paul, who tells you that if you receive circumcision [as a supposed requirement of salvation], Christ will be of no benefit to you [for you will lack the faith in Christ that is necessary for salvation].

3 Once more I solemnly affirm to every man who receives circumcision [as a supposed requirement of salvation], that he is under obligationandrequired to keep the whole Law.

4 You have been severed from Christ, if you seek to bejustified [that is, declared free of the guilt of sin and its penalty, and placed in right standing with God] through the Law; you have fallen from grace [for you have lost your grasp on God’s unmerited favor and blessing].

5 For we [not relying on the Law but] through the [strength and power of the Holy] Spirit, by faith, are waiting [confidently] for the hope of righteousness [the completion of our salvation].

6 For [if we are] in Christ Jesus neither circumcision nor uncircumcision means anything, but only faith activatedandexpressedandworking through love.

7 You were running [the race] well; who has interferedandprevented you from obeying the truth?

8 This [deceptive] persuasion is not from Him who called you [to freedom in Christ].

9 A littleleaven [a slight inclination to error, or a few false teachers] leavens the whole batch [it perverts the concept of faith and misleads the church].

10 I have confidence in you in the Lord that you will adopt no other view [contrary to mine on the matter]; but the one who is disturbing you, whoever he is, will have to bear the penalty.

11 But as for me,brothers, if I am still preaching circumcision [as I had done before I met Christ; and assome accuse me of doing now, as necessary for salvation], why am I still being persecuted [by Jews]? In that case the stumbling block of the cross [to unbelieving Jews] has been abolished.

12 I wish that those who are troubling you [by teaching that circumcision is necessary for salvation] would even [go all the way and] castrate themselves!

13 For you, my brothers, were called to freedom; only do not let your freedombecomean opportunity for thesinful nature (worldliness, selfishness), but throughlove serveandseek the best for one another.

14 For the whole Law [concerning human relationships] is fulfilled in one precept, “You shall love your neighbor asyourself[that is, you shall have an unselfish concern for others and do things for their benefit].”

15 But if you bite and devour one another [in bickering and strife], watch out that you [along with your entire fellowship] are not consumed by one another.

16 But I say, walkhabituallyin the [Holy] Spirit [seek Him and be responsive to His guidance], and then you will certainly not carry out the desire of thesinful nature [which responds impulsively without regard for God and His precepts].

17 For the sinful nature has its desire which is opposed to the Spirit, and the [desire of the] Spirit opposes thesinful nature; for these [two, the sinful nature and the Spirit] are in direct opposition to each other [continually in conflict], so that you [as believers] do not [always] do whatever [good things] you want to do.

18 But if you are guidedandled by the Spirit, you are not subject to the Law.

19 Now the practices of thesinful nature areclearlyevident: they are sexual immorality, impurity, sensuality (total irresponsibility, lack of self-control),

20 idolatry,sorcery, hostility, strife, jealousy, fits of anger, disputes, dissensions, factions [that promote heresies],

21 envy, drunkenness, riotous behavior, andotherthings like these. I warn you beforehand, just as I did previously, that those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.

22 But the fruit of the Spirit [the result of His presence within us] is love [unselfish concern for others], joy, [inner] peace, patience [not the ability to wait, but how we act while waiting], kindness, goodness, faithfulness,

23 gentleness, self-control. Against such things there is no law.

24 And those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified thesinful nature together with its passions and appetites.

25 If we [claim to] live by the [Holy] Spirit, we must also walk by the Spirit [with personal integrity, godly character, and moral courage–our conduct empowered by the Holy Spirit].

26 We must not become conceited, challengingorprovoking one another, envying one another.

GALATIANS 6

Bear One Another’s Burdens

1 Brothers, if anyone is caught in any sin, you who are spiritual [that is, you who are responsive to the guidance of the Spirit] are to restore such a person in a spirit of gentleness [not with a sense of superiority or self-righteousness], keeping a watchful eye on yourself, so that you are not tempted as well.

2 Carry one another’s burdens and in this way you will fulfill the requirements of the law of Christ [that is, the law of Christian love].

3 For if anyone thinks he is something [special] when [in fact] he is nothing [special except in his own eyes], he deceives himself.

4 But each one must carefully scrutinize his own work [examining his actions, attitudes, and behavior], and then he can have the personal satisfaction and inner joy of doing something commendablewithout comparing himself to another.

5 For every person will have to bear [with patience] his own burden [of faults and shortcomings for which he alone is responsible].

6 The one who is taught the word [of God] is to share all good things with his teacher [contributing to his spiritual and material support].

7 Do not be deceived, God is not mocked [He will not allow Himself to be ridiculed, nor treated with contempt nor allow His precepts to be scornfully set aside]; for whatever a man sows, thisandthis only is what he will reap.

8 For the one who sows to his flesh [his sinful capacity, his worldliness, his disgraceful impulses] will reap from the flesh ruinanddestruction, but the one who sows to the Spirit will from the Spirit reap eternal life.

9 Let us not grow wearyorbecome discouraged in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap, if we do not give in.

10 So then, while we [as individual believers] have the opportunity, let us do good to all people [not only being helpful, but also doing that which promotes their spiritual well-being], and especially [be a blessing] to those of the household of faith (born-again believers).

11 See with whatlarge letters Iam writing to you with my own hand.

12 Those who want to make a good impression in public [before the Jews] try to compel you to be circumcised, just so they will escape being persecuted for [faithfulness to] the cross of Christ.

13 For even the circumcised [Jews] themselves do not [really] keep the Law, but they want to have you circumcised so that they may boast in your flesh [that is, in the fact that they convinced you to be circumcised].

14 But far be it from me to boast [in anything or anyone], except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world.

15 For neither is circumcision anything [of any importance], nor uncircumcision, but [only] a new creation [which is the result of a new birth–a spiritual transformation–a new nature in Christ Jesus].

16 Peace and mercy be upon all who walk by this rule [who discipline themselves and conduct their lives by this principle], and upon the [true] Israel of God (Jewish believers).

17 From now on let no one trouble me [by making it necessary for me to justify my authority as an apostle, and the absolute truth of the gospel], for I bear on my body thebranding-marks of Jesus [the wounds, scars, and other outward evidence of persecutions–these testify to His ownership of me].

18 The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with your spirit, mybrothers and sisters. Amen.

2 CORINTHIANS 1

Introduction

1 Paul, an apostle (special messenger, personally chosen representative) of Christ Jesus (the Messiah) by the will of God, and Timothyourbrother,

To the church of God which is at Corinth, and to all thesaints (God’s people) throughout Achaia (southern Greece):

2 Grace to you and peace [inner calm and spiritual well-being] from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.

3 Blessed [gratefully praised and adored] be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and the God of all comfort,

4 who comfortsandencourages us in every trouble so that we will be able to comfortandencourage those who are in any kind of trouble, with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God.

5 For just as Christ’s sufferings are ours in abundance [as they overflow to His followers], so also our comfort [our reassurance, our encouragement, our consolation] is abundant through Christ [it is truly more than enough to endure what we must].

6 But if we are troubledanddistressed, it is for your comfort and salvation; or if we are comfortedandencouraged, it is for your comfort, which works [in you] when you patiently endure the same sufferings which weexperience.

7 And ourhope for you [our confident expectation of good for you] is firmly grounded [assured and unshaken], since we know that just as you shareas partnersin our sufferings, so also you shareas partnersin our comfort.

8 For we do not want you to be uninformed, brothers and sisters, aboutour trouble in [the west coast province of] Asia [Minor], how we were utterly weighed down, beyond our strength, so that we despaired even of life [itself].

9 Indeed, we felt within ourselves that we had received the sentence of death [and were convinced that we would die, but this happened] so that we would not trust in ourselves, but in God who raises the dead.

10 He rescued us from so great athreat ofdeath, and willcontinue torescue us. On Him we have set our hope. And He will again rescue us [from danger and draw us near],

11 while you join in helping us by your prayers. Then thanks will be given by many persons on our behalf for the gracious gift [of deliverance] granted to us throughthe prayers ofmany [believers].

Paul’s Integrity

12 This is our [reason for] proud confidence: our conscience testifies that we have conducted ourselves in the world [in general], and especially toward you, with pure motives and godly sincerity, not in human wisdom, but in the grace of God [that is, His gracious lovingkindness that leads people to Christ and spiritual maturity].

13 For we write you nothing other than what you read and understand [there is no double meaning in what we say]. And I hope you will [accurately] understand [divine things] until the end;

14 just as you have [already] partially understood us, [and one day will recognize] that you can be proud of us just as we are of you, in the day of our Lord Jesus.

15 It was with this confidence that I planned at first to visit you, so that you might receive twice a token of grace;

16 that is, [I wanted] to visit you on my way to Macedonia, and [then] to come back to you [on my return] from Macedonia, and have you send me on my way to Judea.

17 So then, was I indecisiveorcapricious when I was [originally] planning this? Or the things I plan, do I planin a self-serving way like a worldly man, ready to say, “Yes, yes” and “No, no” [at the same time]?

18 But [as surely as] God is faithfulandmeans what He says, our message to you is not “Yes” and “No” [at the same time].

19 For the Son of God, Jesus Christ, who was preached among you by us, by me, Silvanus, and Timothy, was not “Yes” and “No,” but has proved to be “Yes” in Him [true and faithful, the divine “Yes” affirming God’s promises].

20 For as many as are the promises of God, in Christ they are [all answered] “Yes.” So through Him we say our “Amen” to the glory of God.

21 Now it is God who establishesandconfirms us [in joint fellowship] with you in Christ, and who has anointed us [empowering us with the gifts of the Spirit];

22 it is He who has also put His seal on us [that is, He has appropriated us and certified us as His] and has given us the [Holy] Spirit in our hearts as a pledge [like a security deposit to guarantee the fulfillment of His promise of eternal life].

23 But I call on God as my soul’s witness, that it was to spare you [pain and discouragement] that I did not come again to Corinth–

24 not that we rule [like dictators] over your faith, butratherwe work with you for [the increase of] your joy; for in your faith you stand firm [in your strong conviction that Jesus of Nazareth–the Messiah–is the Son of God, through whom we obtain eternal salvation].

2 CORINTHIANS 2

Reaffirm Your Love

1 But I made up my mind not to grieve you with another painful visit.

2 For if I cause you grief [by a well-deserved rebuke], who then provides me enjoyment but the very one whom I have made sad?

3 And Iwrote this same thing to you, so that when I came, I would not be filled with sorrow by those who ought to make me glad, for I trusted in youandfelt confident that my joy would be shared by all of you.

4 For I wrote to you out of great distress and with an anguished heart, and with many tears, not to cause you sorrow but to make you realize the [overflowing] love which I have especially for you.

5 But ifsomeone has caused [all this] sorrow, he has caused it not to me, but in some degree–not to put it too severely–[he has distressed and grieved] all of you.

6 For such a one this punishment by the majority is sufficient,

7 so instead [of further rebuke, now] you should rather [graciously] forgive and comfortandencourage him, to keep him from being overwhelmed by excessive sorrow.

8 Therefore I urge you to reinstate him in your affectionsandreaffirm yourlove for him.

9 For this was my purpose in writing, to see if you would stand the test, whether you are obedientandcommitted to following my instruction in all things.

10 If you forgive anyone anything, I too forgive [that one]; and what I have forgiven, if I have forgiven anything, has been for your sake in the presence of [and with the approval of] Christ,

11 to keep Satan from taking advantage of us; for we are not ignorant of his schemes.

12 Now when I arrived at Troas topreachthe good news of Christ, even though a door [of opportunity] opened for me in the Lord,

13 my spirit could not rest because I did not find my brother Titusthere;so saying goodbye to them, I left for Macedonia.

14 But thanks be to God, who always leads us in triumph in Christ, and through us spreadsandmakes evident everywhere the sweet fragrance of the knowledge of Him.

15 For we are thesweetfragrance of Christ [which ascends] to God, [discernible both] among those who are being saved and among those who are perishing;

16 to thelatterone an aroma from death to death [a fatal, offensive odor], but to the other an aroma from life to life [a vital fragrance, living and fresh]. And who is adequateandsufficiently qualified for these things?

17 For we are not like many, [acting like merchants] peddling God’s word [shortchanging and adulterating God’s message]; but from pure [uncompromised] motives, as [commissioned and sent] from God, we speak [His message] in Christ in the sight of God.
